Congratulations! Your little bundle of joy is on the way!

You have a lot to do, including preparing for the birth, getting the nursery ready (here are gorgeous nurseries!) and, of course, choosing a name for baby.

This can be easy, hard and everything in between. Maybe you’ve already chosen a name (most couples do according to this poll), but if you’re still trying to come up with one, here’s a few ways you can choose a great name:

  1. Consider naming him/her after a relative. Choosing the father’s name for baby boys is has been for very common for. Maybe you have a cherished aunt whose memory you could honor by using her name.
  2. Combine your and your spouse’s names. Not always easy, but it can be fun seeing what you come up with!
  3. Think about naming your little tyke after a city or state that has with special meaning for you. Did you honeymoon in Phoenix? Phoenix is a nice name! Denver? Dakota?
  4. Religious names are always popular, especially in Utah. Noah, and Jacob (and Lehi in Utah) have been recent favorites.
  5. Check the trends (here is the “hot” name list for 2012). Classic names like Emma, Olivia and Sophie are back. Good, but remember that your child might be going to school with four others with the same name!
  6. Naming your baby after a celebrity is also quite common.
  7. Be open to inspiration! Relax and keep your eyes peeled. You never know when the name of a character in a movie or the title of a song might strike you as just right.
  8. There are many sources available for help online—here’s a good one that can tell you the significance of names.
  9. Sometimes you can start by looking at and experiencing YOUR baby and finding a name that fits this impression. This author knows a woman who was set on the name Corey for her son, but changed it after he was born to Ryan because “He seemed more like a Ryan.”
