We’ve heard some humorous stories about bringing home babies over the years. There are many occasions when expectant mothers forget to pack a bag before they’ve gotten to the hospital. Their poor husbands are forced to rush to nearby stores looking for anything that might fit their wives once the baby is born. Let’s just say giant, sparkly unicorn nightgowns are all the rage for moms who forgot their baby bag.
Whether it’s your first or your fifth, it’s a good idea to prepare a few things before you baby comes home from the hospital. Although, if it is your fifth, you’re probably already aware of this. Nevertheless, there’s always something new and unexpected that comes along with each pregnancy. So try out some of the tips below and focus on what really counts: that adorable, little bundle of joy.
First: Make sure you’re ready to go to the hospital. It’s important to pack a bag with a few personal things you need, like a toothbrush and your favorite fluffy bathrobe. Also, consider including comfortable clothes for you to wear home and an iPod with headphones. And definitely don’t forget a rear-facing, infant car seat. Not only will it keep your baby safe, but it’s required by law.
Second: Get cooking! It’s a great idea to make meals for your family in advance and keep them in the freezer. When dinnertime comes, you won’t even have to think about it. You can just grab something healthy and delicious that you’ve already made.
Third: Diapers? Check. Formula (even if you are breastfeeding, it’s good to have a small supply)? Check. Breast pump (if you are breastfeeding)? Check. Basinet? Check. There are a lot of things you need to consider when you bring your baby home. Make sure you have all the supplies you need for feeding, diapering, sleeping, bathing, driving, and entertaining your new baby.
Fourth: Get the nursery ready. Whether you decide to keep your newborn near you in your own bedroom or create a nursery in a separate bedroom, it’s a good idea to have this space ready a few weeks before you bring your bundle home. Whatever space you decide on, try to make it a soothing and calm environment.
Fifth: Do something nice for yourself. Whether you decide get a manicure and pedicure, a prenatal massage, or just take a nap, realize that spoiling yourself a little before the baby comes will help you relax. Resting and relaxing is important for moms-to-be, because once that little boy or girl arrives, you’ll have a very busy schedule.
Hopefully, this little list of tips will help you avoid having to wear a sparkly unicorn nightgown after your baby is born, as well as prepare for the new addition to your home. For more advice, talk with one of our doctors or visit us at Brigham City Community Hospital.
